Coping as an Artist...

Why talk about Coping as part of our Blog series related to the Arts? Because artists face some

of the highest amounts of rejection and are more subjected to comparison than in most other

fields. Add to that the fact that winter is the season for lots of stress and the potential for

seasonal depression.

What does Coping mean? Coping is our ability to deal with something difficult in an effective

way.

We tend to deal with coping through either Approach or Avoidance tactics. Both can have pros

and cons. It’s helpful to use both options at different times and to know your primary choice.

A highly effective way to utilize coping is through triple threat breathing, also known as box

breathing. This tool can be used virtually anywhere and is especially helpful when practiced on

a daily basis. It involves finding a comfortable position, possibly playing soothing music/nature

sounds in the background, then slowly breathing in for the count of 3, holding that breath for

the count of 3, then exhaling for the count of 3. You will find your heart rate slower, your

world quieter, and your mind more focused.

Additional coping strategies include finding humor, seeking support from others, problem

solving, relaxation techniques, physical activities such as walking/running, being positive and

beginning your day with positive affirmations, developing a growth mindset, learning from your

mistakes, making the choice not to overreact to stressors, utilizing time management

strategies, communicating your emotions, accepting yourself and others, and making

connections with people.

So the next time you find yourself in a stressful situation or time period, try to incorporate our triple threat breathing or find one of the many strategies that works best for you!
